The Brock Badgers men's basketball team dropped a 95-89 decision to the York Lions on Friday, Jan. 19 in Toronto.
Fifth-year guard Jevon Brown remains a bright spot for the Badgers, recording 23 points, seven rebounds and an assist. Fourth-year forward Jordan Tchuente and fourth-year guard Kevaughn Ellis both ended with double digits, recording 16 and 11, respectively.
The first quarter proved to be closely contested, back-and-forth competitive action, as both teams traded buckets, with either team unable to find a definitive edge. After 10 minutes of play, Brock held a slim 20-19 lead.
The high-paced action only continued in the second quarter as the Lions swung the momentum in their favour and got out to an early lead. As the Lions attempted to pull away, the Badgers had an answer, as Tchuente and Brown both recorded six points in the quarter to keep it close. The Lions finished the half on a 11-2 run, causing the Badgers to trail 55-41.
York picked up right where they left off to start the half with a fast break three to extend their lead as Brock struggled to find their shooting. Hackett broke through the Badgers shooting struggles, with back-to-back threes to bring the game close again. Yet it seemed that for every basket the Badgers made, the Lions had an answer, holding on to a 83-70 lead at the end of the third.
To start the fourth, the Badgers were the team to come out hot after the break fueled off a deep Ellis jumper, cutting the lead to as close as nine. Following a Brock timeout, third-year forward Marlon Lestin and Tchuente both drained jumpers to cut the lead to five with less than a minute left, putting the pressure on the Lions. The home side were able to work the ball into free throws, and the Badgers fell short on Friday night.
Up next, the Badgers (7-7) will look to defend home court at Bob Davis Gymnasium against the visiting Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (10-4) on Saturday, Jan. 20, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. You can purchase your tickets at https://brocku.universitytickets.com. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
