The Brock Badgers secured a massive 63-41 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, Jan. 26 in Thunder Bay for their seventh consecutive win. Â
Third-year guard Madalyn Weinert led the Badgers in points with 32 in the win. The St. Catharines product also led the way in rebounds with seven. Third-year guard/forward Oluwatito Akinnusi recorded six assists which was a game-high for either team.Â
The Badgers took a strong lead early in the first quarter through Weinert, who was found down low in the paint on a pass from Akinnusi. Throughout the opening frame, the Badgers continued to show a strong defensive structure, limiting the Thunderwolves to few chances. The Badger's sizable advantage grew larger after Angeline Campbell was able to pick up a basket and the foul, converting on the free throw to make it 20-5 for Brock.  Â
In the second quarter, Weinert continued to rack up the points, making three consecutive two-pointers and expanding the Badgers' lead up to 30-10. After some well-worked passing, first-year point guard Shailah Adams was able to find an open Noor Bazzi who finished off the three-point play, putting Brock up 34-15 over Lakehead. Â
A quick layup from third-year forward Olivia Fiorucci opened the second half for the Badgers, with the scoreline now showing 39-15 in favour of Brock. Weinert's 30th point of the game came late in the third quarter as the Badgers amassed a 31-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Â
The fourth quarter saw the Thunderwolves close the gap, but the damage done early by the Badgers put the game firmly out of reach. Â
