Third-period surge: Strongman powers Badgers past Bold on Friday afternoon

In front of an energetic School Day Game crowd, the Brock Badgers played spoiler, defeating the host TMU Bold 4-2 on Friday, Jan. 26 in Toronto.

The scoring surge in the third period was led by first-year forward Randyll Strongman, who scored both the game tying and game-winning goal. Fellow first-year forward Kaedyn Gomes earned her first career Ontario University Athletics goal while junior defender Ella Krushelnicki added one in an empty net.

Senior goaltender Kenzie Harmison notched her eighth win of the year after making 24 saves in the contest.

In a tightly contested first period, the Badgers got the upper hand in shots, putting up seven compared to the four from the Bold. However, it was TMU who scored first, finding the back of the net at 6:29 into the frame off the stick of Megan Breen.

The Badgers came out rejuvenated in the second period, putting up lots of scoring chances near the midway point. This paid off, as Gomes put in a shorthanded marker to even things up. Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in the period as the score remained 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Getting out to a hot start, the Bold gained the lead for the second time, scoring just 51 seconds into the third on the power play courtesy of Gaby Gareau. On a power play of their own, the Badgers evened things up once again. Strongman took a pass from Claudia Murphy and wristed a puck past the glove side of TMU goaltender Shannon Harris for the equalizer. Just over three minutes later, Strongman was at it once more, taking advantage of a TMU turnover to put a backhand in for Brock's first lead of the game. Krushelnicki added an insurance goal on an empty net to seal the 4-2 win for the visitors.

Up next, the Badgers (7-10-1-3) travel to North Bay on Saturday, Jan. 27 to clash with the No. 6 Nipissing Lakers (14-3-4-0). Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game can be seen on OUA.tv.
