Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Evan Curnew

Badgers earn road point against No. 6 Lakers

The Brock Badgers women's hockey team was defeated 2-1 in overtime by the No. 6 nationally ranked Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, Jan. 27 in North Bay.

Fourth-year goaltender Kenzie Harmison impressed in the overtime loss, stopping 41 out of 43 shots faced. Second-year forward Jenna Duarte scored Brock's lone goal of the game, which was the Hamilton native's seventh of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season.

The Badgers found the opening goal through Duarte, who was able to put away the loose puck in front of the net after multiple rush chances in close. The Lakers held plenty of offensive zone possession in the opening period but were unable to beat a solidified Brock defence as the Badgers went into the first intermission with the lead.

Brock's penalty kill throughout the second period stayed strong, preventing Nipissing from equalizing the game on the power play. Midway through the second frame, Nipissing found their first goal from Malory Diminco.

The Lakers continued to pile on the pressure in the third period, but again Harmison kept the Badgers in the game. A late penalty was successfully killed off by the Badgers, who brought the game to overtime.

A little under a minute into the extra frame, the Nipissing Lakers found the winner from Katie Chomiak, who leads the OUA in points.

Up next, the Brock Badgers (7-10-1-4) face the Queen's Gaels (9-10-0-3) at Canada Games Park on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at https://brocku.universitytickets.com/.
