On Thursday, Jan. 4, the No. 10 Brock Badgers men's hockey team fell 3-2 to the TMU Bold in Toronto.
Freshman forward Riley Gannon and veteran Jared Marino scored one goal each for Brock. Goaltender Connor Ungar, who was named to the U SPORTS All-Stars Series roster last month, stopped 20 of 23 shots faced.
In the initial period, the Badgers stood tall on two first-period penalty kills, successfully denying the TMU Bold from taking the lead. Brock led the first in shots, recording 13 while limiting the Bold to just eight. The Badgers' power play generated opportunities near the end of the first frame but were unable to beat TMU's Kai Edmonds in goal.
The Bold opened the scoring on the penalty kill, as an unfortunate takeaway behind the Badgers' net allowed for the Bold's Kyle Bollers to score a short-handed goal. Brock was quick to respond as just over three minutes later, Gannon saw his shot trickle past Edmonds and tie the game at one apiece. Junior forward Christopher Cote picked up his fourth assist of the season on the goal.
Near the halfway point of the final period, a TMU Bold shot from the point found its way through traffic and was eventually tipped home, giving the hosts the lead. The Bold were able to double their lead just minutes later after a scramble in the Badgers' crease resulted in Daniil Grigorev finding the scoresheet. With Ungar pulled for the extra attacker, Marino helped cut the Bold's lead to just one courtesy of a Jonah Boria assist. A valiant Badgers' team fought until the final whistle but could not find the tying goal.
Up next, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team (14-5-0) will host the Guelph Gryphons (8-10-0) on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Canada Games Park, with the puck dropping at 2 p.m. You can catch all the action on OUA.tv.
