The Brock Badgers women's hockey team returned to action from the winter break on Friday, Jan. 5, where they dropped a close 2-1 loss on the road in overtime against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
First-year forward
Rayna Franklin scored her first career Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goal, while senior goaltender
Kenzie Harmison made 23 saves in the loss.
In the first period, the Badgers generated some quality scoring chances but were having trouble converting them early on. Ontario Tech proceeded to open the scoring halfway through the period. Brock pushed hard to answer back quickly but were slowed down by going on the penalty kill late in the frame. The first period ended with Ontario Tech leading 1-0.
Both teams were strong defensively in the second period. Brock did a great job of forcing turnovers and keeping the game at a high pace. Ontario Tech was keeping the Badgers on the perimeter of the offensive zone and not allowing Brock to enter high percentage scoring areas. The Ridgebacks continued to hold a 1-0 advantage heading into the third.
That scoreline would not last for long as the Badgers tied things up early in the third. Franklin forced a turnover in the Badgers' zone to start a two-on-one opportunity and she decided to do it all herself, sniping one short side. Both teams had some quality chances the rest of the period but neither were able to find another goal.
In overtime, the Badgers looked very strong early as they created some amazing chances but Ridgeback's goaltender Zoe Mcgee turned them all away. Ontario Tech scored the game winner late in the overtime period to take the win.
Next up, the Badgers (5-7-3) will travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels (6-8-2-0) on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 2:30 p.m. You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
