The Brock Badgers women's hockey team had their second game in back-to-back days on Saturday, Jan. 6 where they won 2-1 against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston.
Senior defender
Madelyn Walsh continued her stellar season with another goal. The Hammonds Plains, NS native notched her team-leading sixth goal of the year, which is good for first in the province among defenders. Junior forward
Madison Cronkwright also tallied a goal in the contest; her fourth of the season. Senior goaltender
Kenzie Harmison was outstanding for the Badgers, making 34 saves in the win.
The Badgers started this game out on the back foot, taking a penalty within the first minute of play. However, their penalty kill was phenomenal as they hardly allowed Queen's into the Brock zone for the entire two minutes. The success on the penalty kill translated over to the Badgers other special teams' unit as Brock opened the scoring on the power play. Walsh took a pass at the point from
Ashley Robitaille and proceeded to walk into the slot before firing one blocker side for the first goal of the game. Brock ended the first period leading 1-0.
In the second period, the Badgers remained strong defensively, killing off another penalty early in the frame. Midway through the period, Cronkwright forced a turnover at the Gaels' blue line and scored on the breakaway by roofing one past the glove of Queen's Emma Tennant. The Badgers held a two-goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.
Queen's started to really put on the pressure in the third period, forcing Harmison to make some incredible saves early on. With just under seven minutes left to play, the Gaels scored off of a scramble in front of the net to cut the Brock lead in half. That would be as close as they would get as Harmison made more great saves in the dying minutes to secure the win.
Next up, the Badgers (6-7-3) will travel to Guelph to take on the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons (11-1-2-2) on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 pm. Catch the game live on OUA.tv.
