Weinert and Akinnusi power Badgers to win over Varsity Blues

The Badgers completed the weekend sweep, besting the Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 70-52 on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Toronto.

As they have been doing all season, junior guards Madalyn Weinert and Oluwatito Akinnusi led the way for the Badgers. Weinert had a game-high 27 points, while Akinnusi added 23 of her own. Both players finished with double-doubles, with 11 and 14 rebounds each.

The Badgers got out to 8-3 lead, but the home side did not make things easy, narrowing the gap to within one multiple times in the quarter. The lethal combo of Akinnusi and Weinert started strong, scoring 15 of Brock's 17 points in the quarter as they led 17-15.

Toronto's first lead of the game at 20-19 did not last long as the Badgers answered with an Audrey Ntetani Umba three-pointer and multiple layups from Weinert to force a U of T timeout. Weinert hit her 17th point of the game after a key step-back three-pointer to bring the Badgers advantage to 11 at 33-22. At halftime, the Badgers held a 35-27 advantage.

The Varsity Blues came out with a mini run of their own to cause an early Brock timeout. Though Toronto kept fighting, the Badgers stood tall aided by the defence of Weinert, who had two steals and a block in the third. A Shaliah Adams two-point jumper and layup from Akinnusi brought the Badgers lead to ten near the latter part of the quarter. After thirty minutes of play, Brock was up six points.

Akinnusi poured in eight of her 23 points in the fourth, while back-to-back three-pointers from Umba and Noor Bazzi helped punctuate the Badgers' lead to 18; their largest of the contest. That would be the final score of the contest as the Badgers earned their second consecutive win.

Up next, the Badgers (7-4) host the Algoma Thunderbirds (1-9) at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. Catch the action on OUA.tv.
