Brock wins big in season opener over Guelph

The Badgers opened the season with a win at home over the Gryphons.

The Brock Badges men's basketball team came away with a 64-47 win against the visiting Guelph Gryphons at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Thursday, Oct. 24.

It was a performance to remember for newcomer Nathan Charles as the fourth-year guard led the Badgers in both points (10) and rebounds (7).

Davanté Hackett recorded more assists than anyone in the contest with four.

The Badgers spread the offence around the first quarter which ended with Jordan Nelson draining a three-point shot to make it 27-10 after 10 minutes.

Guelph controlled the momentum in the second quarter but a late layup from Xavier Fearon gave Brock 37 points at the half and a 14-point advantage.

A dominant third quarter helped the Badgers build on their already big lead as a successful free-throw and a three-pointer from Georges Mfwamba Ngandu saw Brock up 57-34.

The Gryphons pressed late in the fourth quarter to cut into the Badgers' deficit but it was not enough as the hosts ended the game with a 17-point lead.

It wasn't Guelph's night from beyond the arc as they made just one three-pointer to Brock's four.

Brock also lead the way in field-goal percentage with 34.4 to Guelph's 29.8.

Next, the Brock Badgers men's basketball team heads to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on OUA.tv.
