Badgers earn season-opening win against Warriors

Brock came up victorious in their first game of the season in Waterloo.

In what was a high-scoring game, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team secured a 5-4 win against the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Plenty of milestones were reached for the Badgers in the contest, with first-year forward Alexis Cournoyer, third-year forward Andrew Amousse and third-year defenceman Samuel Huston all scoring their first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goals in the season opener.

It was also the first career OUA win for goaltender Will Hambley who made 24 saves in the victory.

Third-year forward Holden Rogers led the Badgers in points, scoring once and assisting twice in the game.

The Badgers had to fight back multiple times in the contest, scoring in the first period on a Amousse tip from a Rylan Theissen point shot and a Ryan Thompson shorthanded marker early in the second.

In that same period, the Badgers found themselves down two. A power-play marker from Cournoyer and a a point shot from Hutson evened the score at 4-4 with just under three minutes to play in the frame.

Just 16 seconds into the third period, Jordan Stock slid a perfect pass over to Rogers on a 2-on-1 to give Brock their first lead of the night and the eventual game winner.

The shot counter finished with both teams recording 28 shots.

Next, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team stays put in Waterloo as they face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. You can follow along through OUA.tv. The Badgers split the season series against the Golden Hawks last year, losing 5-2 on Nov. 25, 2023 and winning 2-1 on Nov. 12, 2023.
