The Brock Badgers men's basketball team captured its first regular season win away from home in a dominant performance.
The Badgers started their road slate with a big win and currently stand at 5-3 on the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season following an 87-65 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds at the George Leach Centre in Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Davanté Hackett led the Badgers in scoring with 14 points while Jalen Edwards, Anthony Heyes, and Thierry Tshibola each scored double-digit points in the contest.
Brock was on fire from three-point land as they hit 14 of the 33 attempted shots for 42.4% compared to the eight-of-33 for 24.2% that Algoma had.
The defence came to play as the Badgers held the Thunderbirds away from the basket and closed the first quarter with a 24-14 lead.
It was a more competitive second quarter as Algoma posted 23 points to Brock's 22 points, but the Badgers led by a score of 46-37 at the midway point.
Brock continued to control the game in the third quarter as they scored 25 more points and held Algoma to another low scoring frame with 10 points.
Algoma stepped up in the final quarter but Brock had established a comfortable lead that let the Badgers see the game out for the 87-65 win.
The Badgers led in various game categories, but the 38 total rebounds and 39 bench points proved to be the biggest impact as the Thunderbirds recorded only 29 rebounds and 20 bench points.
The Badgers play on the road again as they head to London to play the Western Mustangs at Alumni Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. You can catch the game on OUA.tv. These teams last faced each other on February 28, 2024 in an OUA semifinal game, with the Badgers coming out on top with a 75-72 win.
