The Brock Badgers men's basketball team is back to their winning ways.
Coming back home to the friendly confines of Bob Davis Gymnasium, the Badgers secured a 78-66 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 9 for their second win of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season.
Second-year guard Anthony Heyes delivered a career-high 17 points. The local St. Catharines product was lights out from beyond the arc, shooting 83.3 per cent off a 5-of-6 performance.
The first quarter was tight throughout as no team could find the edge as both teams shot under 50% from the field and had an equal number of rebounds with nine each.
A 60% shooting percentage from the field and an astounding 71.4 % from three helped lead the Badgers to a 25-13 second quarter and a 45-33 halftime lead.
A 15-5 run for the Badgers in the third quarter was countered by a 13-8 one from the Warriors. Despite the push from the visitors, the host Badgers held a 68-51 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored the Badgers 15-10 but because the hosts built such a comfortable advantage in the previous three quarters, it was not enough to mount a comeback.
Brock as a team shot 40.6% from three-point range and outworked the Warriors on the glass 39-26.
Michael Matas delivered 16 points and Davanté Hackett had 12 to help the Badgers achieve an impressive 47 bench points.
Up next, the Badgers will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. The game can be seen on OUA.tv and tickets are also available at brocku.universitytickets.com. In the playoffs last season, the Badgers bested the then No. 2 OUA seed Gee-Gees in the semifinals by a score of 81-58.
