Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Evan Curnew

Robitaille keeps Badgers' playoff hopes alive

The Brock Badgers' women's hockey team recorded two massive points on Friday, Feb. 16, winning 1-0 against the Western Mustangs at Canada Games Park in overtime.

With the win, the Badgers remain the in the hunt for Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoffs.

Third-year defender Ashley Robitaille scored the lone goal in the game, which was the overtime winner for Brock. Fourth-year goaltender Kenzie Harmison stopped al 35 shots faced for her fourth shutout of the season.

In the opening frame, Western controlled most of the possession of the puck, pilling up the shots early on Brock. With six minutes remaining in the first period, second-year forward Malika McDonald made a nifty move in close to the Mustangs' net before a quick shot was turned away by Western goaltender Ella Brabrook. Brock successfully killed off two penalties in the first period to keep the score level at zero.

Brock pushed back on Western's opening period dominance on the shot clock by finding chances of their own in the middle frame. A shot from the top of the circle from Madeline Nicholson caught Brabrook off guard, who rebounded the puck out to a scrum of players but the play did not develop further. Both teams remained tied after two.

The third period opened with a massive save from Harmison, who successfully fended off a Mustangs' breakaway chance by sliding out of the crease to ensure the puck stayed out of the net. Later in the final frame of regulation time, fourth-year defender Madelyn Walsh pulled off an important block down low near the Badgers' goal to ensure that the Mustangs were not able to find a go-ahead goal. With two minutes left in the period, Harmison again made a big save; this team ensuring that a 3-on-1 chance from Western did not result in a goal.

In overtime, Robitaille stole the puck off the blade of a Mustang player, before going past two opposing players for the loose puck in the neutral zone. The Medical Sciences major found space in close to the net and made no mistake in lifting the puck above the shoulder of Brabrook, securing the overtime win for the Badgers.

Up next, the Brock Badgers' women's hockey team (8-13-2-4) will play their final game of the regular season with a hunt for the playoffs still on the line as they take on the Western Mustangs again (7-12-4-4), on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Canada Games Park.
