The Brock Badgers women's basketball team celebrated senior night by picking up yet another convincing win, defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 58-39 on Friday, Feb. 9 in Bob Davis Gymnasium.
This was the Badgers' 11
th win in a row as they continue to lead the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Central Division and push to clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs. This win also brought Brock's home record to 10-0 on the season.
Junior guard
Madalyn Weinert strengthened her case for OUA MVP with another outstanding game. Weinert totalled 19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks for her eighth double-double of the season. She continues to lead the league in scoring at 22.0 points per game.
Brock got off to a slow start, not scoring their first points until three minutes into the game. Meanwhile, Laurentian was doing a great job on the offensive boards, giving themselves extra possessions early on.
Noor Bazzi had three steals in the first quarter, which kept the Badgers close during their shooting struggles. The shots started falling more for Brock late in the frame as they were ahead 14-7 heading into the second quarter.
The Badgers got rolling with
Angeline Campbell firing beautiful assists to Bazzi and
Vienna Vercesi for mid-range jump shots early in the quarter. Brock looked strong the rest of the frame thanks to electric play on both ends of the court from Weinert and
Audrey Ntetani Umba. The pair combined for 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the second quarter to give Brock a 35-25 halftime lead.
In the third, the Badgers quickly stretched out their lead, scoring the first seven points of the quarter before the Voyageurs called a timeout to attempt to stop the momentum. The timeout did not phase the Badgers at all though as Weinert, Bazzi, Vercesi and
Oluwatito Akinnusi were scoring from everywhere on the court as the Brock lead grew. The Badgers led 51-32 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Badgers close out the win comfortably. The Brock team defence was on point all night, forcing 16 turnovers throughout the contest and holding the Voyageurs to only 14 second-half points to secure the victory.
