Badgers fall to Gaels at buzzer in Wilson Cup

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team lost 79-76 in heartbreaking fashion against the No. 2 nationally ranked and No. 1 OUA seed Queen's Gaels in the Wilson Cup on Saturday, Mar. 2 in Kingston.

The Badgers were seeded No. 10 heading into the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Playoffs and finish as the OUA silver medalists with a confirmed spot at next weekend's U SPORTS Final 8 in Quebec City.

Jevon Brown left it all out on the court for the Badgers. The senior guard led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jordan Tchuente also contributed a strong game with 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.

The Badgers got out to a dream start, opening up the contest on an 11-0 run. Tchuente, Brown and Kevaughn Ellis all hit three-pointers to force an early Queen's timeout. Brock continued to ride their hot hand from beyond the arc the rest of the quarter, as they shot 6-11 on threes in the opening frame. Tchuente had to leave the game with an injury partway through the quarter, halting some of the Badgers' momentum. The sold-out Queen's crowd tried to provide energy to help their team get back into the game and Queen's chipped away at their deficit. The Badgers led 28-23 heading into the second.

In the second quarter, Queen's quickly got the Brock lead down to one point. Luckily for the Badgers, Tchuente returned to the game a couple minutes into the frame and immediately hit a three-pointer. Brown and Tchuente then scored on back-to-back possessions to get Brock's lead back up to eight to force another Gaels' timeout. That stoppage did not stop the Badgers' momentum as Brown and Ellis connected on consecutive three-pointers out of the timeout. An emphatic block from Michael Okeke and a huge dunk from Marlon Lestin highlighted the last few minutes of the half as Brock went into the break leading 47-38.

The pace of the game slowed down in the third quarter. The contest became very physical with a number of fouls called early and both teams struggling to find open looks. Tchuente scored multiple times for the Badgers but picked up his fourth personal foul around the midway point of the frame and was held out of action for the rest of the quarter. Queen's was then able to erase the majority of the Brock lead and got it down to one with under a minute to go in the quarter. A big three-pointer from Thierry Tshibola in the dying seconds sent the Badgers to the fourth quarter leading 62-58.

Brock battled to hold their lead early in the fourth quarter with Queen's fighting hard to keep them close. Ellis hit another three and Brown scored at the free throw line and in the paint to keep the Badgers ahead. Tchuente fouled out of the game around the midway point of the quarter and the Gaels took advantage, tying the game at 73-73 with just over three minutes left to play. Kingston native Andrew McKenna then hit a huge three-pointer to give the Badgers the lead back. After Queen's had tied it at 76-76, they had the final possession of the game. Gaels forward Cole Syllas proceeded to bank in a buzzer-beating three-pointer to win the game.

Next up, the Badgers will travel to Quebec City to compete in the U SPORTS Final 8 which takes place Friday, Mar. 8 to Sunday, Mar. 10. Stay tuned to gobadgers.ca to see where the Badgers will be seeded and who their first opponent will be.
