The Brock Badgers women's rugby team began their 2024 regular season in Kingston.
In a battle of top teams, the Queen's Gaels came out victorious against the Badgers by a score of 48-6 on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Nixon Field.
Reigning Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year Paige DeNeve scored all six points for the Badgers.
DeNeve kicked her first penalty convert in the 14th minute to reduce the Queen's lead to 5-3.
A second successful penalty kick conversion from the Zephyr, ON product in the 37th minute brought the Queen's advantage to 19-6.
The Badgers were unable to get any closer, with the Gaels scoring 29 unanswered points.
Saturday's contest marked the first game for new head coach Adrian Brown. It was also an impressive debut for two walk-ons in Quinielle Weekes, a Barbados national team member on exchange, and Marisa Freeman, a current Brock women's hockey player who has also transitioned to rugby this season.
Up next, the Badgers will host their home opener in a highly-anticipated matchup with the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. The last time these two teams played, the Badgers were victorious as they defeated the Marauders 23-17 in an OUA quarterfinal contest on Oct. 15, 2022.
