Late goals from Lee lifts Badgers over Gryphons

The Brock Badgers women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the season.

After an opening loss to the Western Mustangs, the Brock Badgers pulled off a thrilling 11-10 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, Sept. 15 in Guelph.

The win against Guelph marked the first for Laura Tober as the Brock women's lacrosse head coach.

Game 1: Brock 7 – Western 14

The Badgers' season opener began with a loss on the road to Western.

A strong opening half saw the Mustangs outscore the Badgers 9-2.

Abby Holliday was Brock's leading goal scorer in the match, scoring four goals, a game-high for either team. Holliday scored both of the Badgers' goals in the first half and added two more in the third quarter.

Brock played a strong second half with both teams scoring five goals each.

Kennedy Smith, Ellie Szkwyra and Rachel Wagner each registered a goal for Brock in the loss.

In the net for the Badgers was Ariawna Mcneil.

Game 2: Brock 11 – Guelph 10

Lucy Lee's two goals late in Brock's second game lifted the Badgers above the Gryphons.

It was a close contest all the way through between Brock and Guelph as the score remained tied 6-6 at halftime and then 8-8 through three quarters played.

Guelph's two fourth-quarter goals in quick succession were nullified when Lee found the equalizer with 1:40 left and the game-winning goal with a mere 29 seconds to go in the game.

The win marked Brock's first over Guelph since Oct. 17, 2021, breaking up a five-game losing streak against the Gryphons.

Leading the Badgers was Gabby Winters, who scored three first-half goals against the Gryphons. The first-year midfielder added a fourth goal in the final quarter.

Rachel Woods picked up two goals in the victory while Smith, Szkwyra and Allison Shoemaker also scored a goal each.

Mcneil was the Badgers goalie in the victory.

Next, the Brock Badgers women's lacrosse team travels to Oshawa to face the Toronto Varsity Blues and Queen's Gaels on Sunday, Sept. 22. The game against the Varsity Blues starts at 11:30 a.m. and the Badgers' contest against the Gaels will start at 3 p.m.
