In their 2024 home opener, the Brock Badgers women's rugby team took down the No. 9 ranked McMaster Marauders in front of an energetic crowd at Alumni Field.
The commanding performance resulted in Brock coming out victorious by a score of 43-5 on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Paige DeNeve, the reigning Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year, led the Badgers in scoring with 18 points from two tries and four conversions.
From the opening kickoff, Brock came out strong, setting the tone early in the form of a try from
Brooke Rempel in the fourth minute.
After carrying a 19-0 lead at halftime, the Badgers saw an influx of offence, with DeNeve notching her second try of the game which was followed by scores from
Abbie Wade,
Bekah Cyr and
Julia Gregory.
The Marauders capitalized on a Badgers yellow card in the 70th minute given to Gregory as they tallied a late score.
Brock's
Mackenzie Lapierre, a fourth-year flanker, notched her first try of the season in the first half.
Saturday's contest marked not only the first win of the season for the Badgers but also the first win for new head coach
Adrian Brown.
Up next, the Brock Badgers women's rugby team will host the No. 4 Guelph Gryphons in a rematch of the 2023 OUA semifinals at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
