Goals from Cournoyer and Rogers lift Badgers over Mustangs

Brock secured its fifth win at Canada Games Park of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season on Saturday.

The Brock Badgers men's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs on Jan. 18 by a score of 2-1.

Alexis Cournoyer and Holden Rogers got on the board for the Badgers in the victory.

The first period saw the Badgers earn three power-play opportunities but the hosts could not find an opening goal through 20 minutes.

Western found the icebreaker early in the second, but the rest of the period saw the ice tilt in Brock's favour. Rogers tied things up before the halfway mark after receiving a perfect no-look pass into the crease from Ethan Sims. The period concluded with Cournoyer burying a one-timer on the power play to put the Badgers up 2-1 after 40 minutes played.

The visiting Mustangs desperately searched for an equalizer in the third period but two successful penalty kills from the Badgers captured the afternoon win for the hosts.

Second-year goaltender Will Hambley stopped 19 of 20 shots in the victory.

Brock led Western in shots 29 to 20, beating the opponents in each period.

Before the first puck drop of the game, seven decades of Brock Badgers men's hockey alumni were celebrated and took part in a ceremonial puck drop.

The ceremonial puck drop took place with an alumnus from every decade of the Brock men's hockey program (Jayson Childs).

Up next, the Brock Badgers men's hockey team host the Carleton Ravens at Canada Games Park on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. The game will be live on OUA.tv and tickets can be found at https://brocku.universitytickets.com/. The last time these two teams met, the Ravens bested the Badgers 3-1 in the nation's capital on Dec. 2, 2023.
