Badgers win eighth straight after battle against Varsity Blues

Brock earned a hard-fought victory at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team prevailed 66-53 on Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

Fourth-year forward Michael Matas led the Badgers with 15 points, and guard Ben Herbert trailed not far behind with 14 points in the contest.

In the first quarter, Brock outscored Toronto 16-9 with Matas setting the tone as he scored seven points, including one three-pointer.

Despite some early fouls, the Badgers fought hard and extended their lead in the second quarter going up 31-21, with the offence contributing three more from the three-point line.

The third quarter saw the Badgers gaining momentum as they showcased their pristine passing resulting in seven assists which led to a 52-34 advantage.

Despite a slow start for the Badgers in the fourth quarter, they regained their composure and pulled away with a 66-53 win over the Varsity Blues.

Second-year guard Davanté Hackett delivered 10 points and two three-pointers in the contest while Jalen Edwards, a fifth-year guard, earned a team-high 11 rebounds.

Brock shot 36.4 per cent from the field while Toronto had 27.7 per cent. 

Up next, the Brock Badgers men's basketball team will make their way to Oshawa to take on the Ridgebacks at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on Friday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. The action can be streamed live on OUA.TV. The Badgers will be looking to avenge their tight 70-72 loss that occurred on Jan. 20, 2024.
