After a successful Brock Open, the Badgers men's wrestling team saw a smaller crew take on the Guelph Open.
The competition took place at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre in Guelph on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Garette Saunders defeated Jacob Abbott in the 57-kg event by technical fall 10-0 to place third for his third medal of the university season. In the semifinals, Saunders dropped a match to Treye Trotman of the Western Mustangs by technical fall 14-3.
Two Badgers placed fourth in the tournament, Gabriel Blanchette and Callum Knox, who were both coming off podium finishes at the Brock Open.
In the 70kg event, Blanchette dropped a close 4-2 decision to Mustafa Sarawary of the Central Toronto Wrestling Club in the third-place match. The Oakville product bounced back from a semifinal defeat to Western's Zachary Ortencio by besting Brennan Laplante-Brady of the Guelph Gryphons by technical fall 23-13.
Knox bested Dawson Skelton of the Gryphons by technical fall 13-2 to get to the semifinals of the 97kg weight class. He would go on to drop a 10-0 technical fall decision to Andrew Johnson of the Saskatoon Wrestling Club before falling in the bronze medal contest to Shawn Lally of the Hamilton Wrestling Club by technical fall 12-2.
Up next, the last competition of the season before the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships takes place on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Western Open in London.
