Brock competed until the final buzzer to defeat a nationally ranked opponent.
The Brock Badgers women's hockey team earned a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory over the No. 7 Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, Jan. 23 in Waterloo.
Jenna Duarte notched both a regulation goal and the game-winning goal in the shootout, while Taylor Wolsey scored her first career Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goal in the contest.
The opening frame remained relatively quiet, as the Badgers outshot the Warriors 6-4, but neither side was unable to find an advantage.
Just over six minutes into the second, Wolsey found herself on the receiving end of a breakout pass from Avery Diljee, and she took it coast-to-coast before shooting past the Waterloo goaltender to break the scoreless deadlock.
Brock found themselves on the two-player advantage late in the period, and Duarte found the back of the net for the visitors to double their lead.
The Warriors got one back on the power play early in the third period, and were able to find the equalizer with just over two minutes to play in the game.
The overtime period saw the Warriors in complete control, as they tallied six shots to the Badgers' one, but neither side was able to find the winner.
After three scoreless rounds in the shootout, Duarte found the back of the net on her second attempt, and Kennedy Lonson made the game-winning save for the Badgers to take it 3-2.
On top of the game-winning save, Lonson made turned aside 25 shots in the contest for her fourth win of the season.
The Warriors narrowly outshot the Badgers 29-27 in the game.
Up next, the Badgers will have a quick turnaround as they host the TMU Bold tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at Canada Games Park. This will be the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the first seeing the Bold victorious in overtime by a score of 3-2 on Friday, Nov. 8.
