Badgers battle in overtime loss to Lions

It was a heartbreaking start to 2025 for the Brock Badgers women's hockey team.

The Badgers held the lead for most of the contest, but the Lions scored the final two goals of the game to win 2-1 at the Canlan Ice Sports Complex in Toronto on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Randyll Strongman, a second-year forward, was the lone goal scorer for the Badgers, notching her third of the season.

Second-year goaltender Ava Cruickshank earned her ninth start of the campaign and turned away 21 of 23 shots she faced.

Despite outshooting the Lions 16-13 and having four power-play opportunities combined in the first two periods, the Badgers were unable to solve York's goaltender Emma Wedgewood.

This changed early in the third when Strongman took the puck from the boards and wristed a shot past Wedgewood for the first goal of the game.

The Lions were not to be denied as they scored with the extra attacker with just over one minute left in the game to bring it to overtime.

In the extra frame, Natasha Lange scored on York's first shot to win the game.

Shots were in favour of the Lions who put up 23 to the Badgers' 20.

Brock went 0-for-4 with the person advantage while York was not able to convert on their lone power-play chance.

Up next, the Badgers remain on the road as they take on the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Jan. 10. Brock is looking to break a seven-game losing skid to Guelph, with their last victory coming on Oct. 20, 2022.
