Lakehead completes weekend series sweep over Brock

The Badgers gave a strong effort but fell on the road in overtime.

The Brock Badgers men's hockey team suffered a 3-2 defeat in the extra period to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Fort William Gardens on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Thunder Bay.

Remaining tied in seventh place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Western Division, the Badgers are still battling their way into the playoffs.

First-year forward Zach Stringer scored his 10th Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goal of the season while second-year defensemen Ryan Thompson notched a goal for the second successive game.

Fourth-year goalie Samuel Vyletelka made 35 saves for Brock, including several in the third period on a late penalty kill to keep the Badgers in the game.

Midway through the first period at the 10:02 minute mark, the Thunderwolves opened the scoring.

Brock was unable to capitalize on a couple of power-play opportunities before Lakehead doubled their lead in the second period just under 14 minutes into the frame.

Just under five minutes into the third, Thompson received a pass from Stepien and scored to cut the Thunderwolves lead to one. After a lengthy four-minute penalty kill, the Badgers tied the game with less than three minutes remaining with a tip from Stringer.

Despite the comeback, Lakehead was able to capitalize and win in overtime just over halfway through the extra period.

Lakehead outshot Brock by 12, recording 38 to Brock's 26.

Up next, the Badgers stay on the road where they will face off against the RMC Paladins at Constantine Arena on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. You can watch the game on OUA.tv. Last time out, the Badgers claimed a 9-2 victory over the Paladins on Oct. 21, 2023.
