Brock's playoff push continued on Thursday night.
The Brock Badgers men's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Feb. 13 at Canada Games Park.
Zack Stringer scored the game-winning goal while
Zander Stewart and
Jordan Stock also found the back of the net in the contest.
Goaltender
Samuel Vyletelka made 24 saves in the triumph.
With the win, the Badgers are currently in the final playoff spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division; one point ahead of the Waterloo Warriors. Brock has one more game to play in the regular season while the Warriors still have two.
After a back-and-forth start to the first period, Brock was able to strike first as a shot from Stewart at the point found its way through traffic and into the back of the net just over seven minutes in.
A late penalty in the first saw the visitors start the second period on the power play, and they capitalized to level the game under a minute in. Despite being outshot 11-4 in the period, Brock was able to respond late in the frame through Stock, who danced his way through Guelph's defence before ripping a shot past the goaltender to put the Badgers back in the lead.
The Gryphons proved they were not going to go down without a fight and brought the game level again six minutes into the third period. A too many men on the ice penalty against the hosts saw Guelph with an opportunity on the man-advantage with two minutes to play. Brock was able to kill it off and send the game to overtime.
After both teams traded opportunities in the overtime frame, Stringer found himself on the receiving end of a breakout pass that left him all alone with Guelph's Cal Schell, and he made no mistake, tucking the backhand shot into the back of the net to ice the game and give Brock the 3-2 victory.
Despite the triumph, the Badgers were outshot 26-22 by the Gryphons in the contest.
Up next, the Badgers will have a quick turnaround as they host the No. 8 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. for their Senior Night at Canada Games Park. The last time these two teams met, the Gee-Gees were victorious by a score of 6-3 on Dec. 1, 2023. You can catch the action on
