The Badgers were not able to complete the season sweep over the Marauders.
The Brock Badgers men's basketball team dropped a 79-72 contest against McMaster on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton.
Davanté Hackett led the Badgers in scoring, notching a game-high 20 points and four three-pointers, while
Anthony Heyes and
Michael Matas also finished with double-digit scoring, recording 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The hosts stormed out to a 13-2 lead to start the game which saw the Badgers on their back foot early. A late three-pointer from Hackett helped to close the gap, but only momentarily, as the Marauders would beat the buzzer to find themselves up 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.
McMaster continued to build on their momentum early in the second quarter as they extended their lead to as much as 16 points; the largest of the game. Brock began to find efficiency from beyond the arc as they recorded three three-pointers, including a buzzer beater from Hackett to close the gap and only trail 38-33 at the break.
For the first time in the game, back-and-forth action was featured as both teams traded points early into the third quarter. The Badgers were only outscored by three in the frame but they still found themselves trailing 61-53 after 30 minutes of play.
A late rally from the visitors saw the game within two points with just under a minute left. Despite this, McMaster was able to take care of the ball, draw fouls while in the bonus and extend their lead beyond a possible Brock comeback to take the game 79-72.
Despite falling in the contest, Brock's three-point percentage of 43.5% bested the 25.8% of McMaster.
Up next, the Badgers will travel to Toronto to face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. In the previous meeting between these two teams this season on Jan. 19, the Badgers were victorious by a score of 66-53. You can catch the action on
