The winning legacy for the Brock men's wrestling team continues.
For the 26th time and ninth straight year, the Brock Badgers were crowned Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champions after winning the 2025 edition of the tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
"There's a lot on the line and it's really important for our athletes. It means a lot to them," said head coach Marty Calder. "There are still things to improve on as we get ready to host the national championships. Overall, the day was really exciting for us and I'm happy for the team."
Medalling in every event and earning 90 points, the Badgers finished 24 ahead of the Western Mustangs who came in second. The McMaster Marauders were third with 51.
With the women's team also capturing a provincial title, the Badgers wrestling teams have now swept the competition for the ninth year in a row.
Garette Saunders capped off his remarkable OUA career for the Badgers with his fifth provincial medal and third overall gold medal. Saunders capped off an undefeated day with a 12-2 technical fall win over Blayne Helou of the McMaster Marauders in the 61kg weight class.
For the second straight year, both Callum Knox (100kg) and Roger Li (125 kg) won gold in their respective weight classes. Knox and Li each won their finals matches by technical fall, with Knox defeating Arjun Cheema (TMU Bold) 10-0 and Li reigning victorious over Mark Summers (Western Mustangs) 15-2.
Both Gabriel Blanchette (68kg) and Yazdan Farokhizad improved on their finishes from last season with gold medal showings in 2025. Blanchette earned a gritty 7-2 decision win over Zachary Ortencio of the Western Mustangs while Farokhizad was dominant, winning by technical fall 10-0 over the McMaster Marauders' Irman Kang.
The Badgers also saw strong debuts from multiple first-year wrestlers.
Cole Coghill was victorious over Luke Lawson (McMaster Marauders) by tehcnical fall 10-0 to claim gold in the 76kg weight class while Hamzah Al-Qayse (72kg) and Zakir Ibrahimkheil (57kg) placed second in their respective events.
Ibrahimkheil took home more hardware on the day, winning the OUA Male Rookie of the Year award.
Rounding out the Badgers' medal results were Johannes Budgey and Mason Mastroianni. Budgey captured his fourth provincial medal of his career after placing second in the 82kg division and Mason Mastroianni made a strong debut with a bronze medal in the 65kg weight class.
For the fourth straight year, Calder was awarded the Men's Coach of the Year.
Next, the Badgers welcome the country's best university wrestlers at the Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships taking place on Friday Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1 at Canada Games Park.
