Brock earned a hard-fought victory.
The Brock Badgers women's basketball team defeated the McMaster Marauders by a score of 76-72 on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton.
Madalyn Weinert, the reigning Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Player of the Year, recorded a career-high 36 points accompanied by a game-high 12 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.
Angeline Campbell also reached a milestone in the contest, recording 13 points to reach 1,000 career points in her university career.
Setting the tone early in the contest, Weinert erupted for 14 of the Badgers' 24 points in the first quarter, which saw the visitors out to a 24-20 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Brock continued to play efficient offensive basketball in the second quarter to lead 47-41. Weinert and Campbell recorded 11 and six points, respectively, while
Shailah Adams,
Olivia Fiorucci and
Ava Stranges all got involved in the scoring as well.
Heading into the second half, the Badgers did not take their foot off the gas, extending their lead as many as 14 points; the largest of the contest.
The fourth quarter saw a late surge from the hosts, as the Marauders would outscore the Badgers 20-12 in the frame. Solid clock management from Brock thwarted any attempt of a McMaster comeback, and the Badgers would see out the game for a 76-72 victory.
Brock continued to perform as a strong free-throw shooting team, boasting an 82.6% compared to the hosts 46.2%.
Up next, the Brock Badgers women's basketball team will travel to Toronto to face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. This will be the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the previous seeing the Badgers victorious by a score of 80-52 on Jan. 19.
