Eric Barnard (Kemble, Ont.) of the men's hockey team and Megan Thiessen (Foothills, Alta.) of the women's hockey team have been named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 11.
Returning to Canada Games Park for the first time in 2026, Barnard and the men's hockey team split two matchups over the weekend. In Friday's 3-2 overtime win over the Windsor Lancers, the Sport Management major tallied two goals and one assist. His first point came during the opening goal, assisting Jonah Boria 13 minutes through the first period to put the Badgers up 1-0. After the Lancers scored two unanswered goals to go up 2-1, the first-year forward responded with two straight goals, including the overtime winner, to give the Badgers a 3-2 victory. During Saturday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Guelph Gryphons, Barnard found the back of the net for the third time in two games. After the Gryphons committed a penalty early in the second period, Barnard made no mistake, netting a power-play goal to tie the score 2-2. This goal helped extend his point streak to four games, earning six points (three goals and three assists) across this span.
Traveling to Toronto for their first two games of the new year, Thiessen led the women's hockey team to wins in both matchups over the weekend. During Friday's 1-0 shootout win over the York Lions, the Kinesiology major earned her first shutout of the regular season, stopping all 20 shots she faced. Additionally, during the shootout, Thiessen stopped three Lions' shots to help clinch the Badgers' victory. Facing off against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, the second-year netminder stopped 30 of the 32 shots she faced, sporting a .932 save percentage en route to a 4-2 victory. Thiessen also helped the Badgers penalty-kill unit kill five of the six power plays they faced over the weekend as the Badgers earned their sixth and seventh wins of the season.
