U SPORTS Top 10: Women’s volleyball ranks No. 6, men’s basketball rises up to No. 9

The Brock Badgers women's volleyball team and men's basketball team both reached the 10-win mark over the weekend, holding spots in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings for another week.

For the seventh consecutive week, the Brock women's volleyball team has earned a place in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings.  

The Badgers travelled to North Bay, Ont. splitting the road series 1-1 with the Nipissing Lakers. In the first match, the Badgers took a 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-23) decision, securing their 10th win of the season in just 11 games total. Mackenna Knox racked up 44 assists, while Emily Foest earned a team-high 16.5 points in the contest, including two crucial kills to finish the second set, which the Badgers took 26-24. Brock demonstrated strong close-out ability, taking three of the final four points in each of the last two frames, with Emma Baruchelli earning kills on both set-clinching points. The Badgers controlled the block department, outscoring the Lakers 13 to nine in this category. 

Saturday's clash went down to the wire with the first four frames being split, but Nipissing prevailed as Brock narrowly dropped the match 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 17-25, 25-19, 14-16). Foest led the Badgers in scoring once again, with 18 points off of 16 kills and two blocks and became the program's all-time leader in points and kills. Charlotte Ross contributed 17 points of her own, including the set-clincing kill in the fourth frame. Brock led the kill battle 63-57 and the assist category 56-62.

Looking to improve on their 10-2 record, the Badgers will return home next weekend as they play host to the RMC Paladins. The first matchup is slated for Friday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m., while the second takes place on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m as the team hosts the Dig for the Cure game as they raise donations for the larger Shoot for the Cure campaign and breast cancer research and awareness.

The Brock men's basketball team continues to hold a spot in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings. 

The Badgers captured their ninth and tenth victory with wins over the weekend against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs. The first game took place on Friday, Jan. 9, with Brock taking the decision 70-56 over Nippising. Andrew McKenna scored a team-high 15 points, grabbing four boards and earning three assists as well. The Badgers led by just one point entering halftime but were able to pull away late, with Michael Okeke scoring eight of his 10 total points in the second half. Brock played strong defence in the contest, securing eight steals to four from Nipissing. 

In Saturday's game, Brock jumped out to a seven-point lead after the first quarter and won the game by the same margin of victory, taking it 71-64 over Laurentian. Xavier Fearon poured in five of his seven three-point attempts in the contest en route to a team-high 16-point performance. McKenna got out to another hot start, scoring eight points in the first quarter. The Badgers led by seven points at the end of the first half and outscored the Voyageurs 17-13 to take an 11-point advantage heading into the final frame. Despite being outscored in the fourth quarter, Brock's early lead helped them claim the decision 71-64. Brock controlled the glass in the contest, outrebounding Laurentian 40-38.

Up next, the Badgers will travel to Thunder Bay, Ont., for a road series with the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse. The first game is set for Friday, Jan. 16, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m., and the second is set for Saturday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m.
