Ben Bonisteel (Fenwick, Ont.) of the men's hockey team and Madalyn Weinert (St. Catharines, Ont.) of the women's basketball team have been named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 25.
In a Sunday, Jan. 25 evening showdown against the Windsor Lancers at Canada Games Park, Bonisteel turned in a strong performance between the pipes, leading the Badgers to a 4-1 victory. The Computer Science major stopped 31 shots in the contest, giving the Badgers their 10th win of the year. The second-year netminder stopped all 13 shots he faced in the first period, and he followed that up by turning aside another 10 in the second. His eight saves in the third stopped any chances of a Windsor comeback as they tried to make a late-game push. Bonisteel finished with a .969 save percentage on the night, his second-highest save rate in a game this season.
Over the week, Weinert recorded a double-double in all three games she played. In an 84-63 defeat to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Monday, Jan. 19, Weinert recorded 29 points and 14 rebounds, adding four blocks and three steals. Returning home to take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Friday, Jan. 23, the Medical Sciences major recorded a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds in a 70-37 victory. The Badgers' all-time leading scorer helped Brock break out to an early 19-10 lead and eclipsed the 2000 career-point mark in this frame. The next night on Saturday, Jan. 24 against the No. 3 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels, the two-time U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian recorded 29 points, four blocks and a career-high 21 rebounds in a narrow 66-64 defeat. Despite trailing 13 at the end of the first quarter, her 13-point, eight-rebound second-quarter tally drew the Badgers within one. The two-time OUA MVP then added a 16-point and 12-rebound performance in the second half, which allowed the Badgers to remain competitive.
