Badgers open season with win on the road

The Brock Badgers women's basketball team have begun their season with a dominant victory away from home.

Travelling to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to battle the Algoma Thunderbirds to kick off the 2026-27 season, the Badgers prevailed with a 66-53 win on Friday, Oct. 23.

Fourth-year veterans Shailah Adams and Vienna Vercesi led the Badgers in scoring with 12 points each, with Adams shooting 57 per cent from behind the arc, while Vercesi posted her first double-double of the season, recording 12 rebounds.

This win marks the first of Ajay Sharma's OUA head coaching career, who was announced as the bench boss for the Badgers in May 2026.

The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the opening quarter, with the visitors holding a slim 17-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

The Badgers began to separate themselves from their opposition in the second quarter, outscoring the Thunderbirds 16-8 to take a 13-point lead into the halftime break on the back of three 3-pointers throughout the frame.

Despite the Thunderbirds opening the second half with a quick 7-0 run, Brock was able to put an end to the Algoma momentum, immediately responding with an 8-0 run themselves to ensure they kept a double-digit lead entering the final quarter before closing out the victory with an 18-point final quarter.

Brock's rebounding on the offensive glass was key in the win, as they secured 23 offensive rebounds compared to Algoma's eight.

The Badgers will look to make it two straight wins as they return home to Bob Davis Gymnasium to welcome the TMU Bold in their home opener. Tip-off is set for Friday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. with tickets for the game available for purchase on University Tickets. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
