The Brock women's rugby team dropped their season opener to the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons.

Despite a vibrant home crowd excited to cheer on their Badgers at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 5, the Gryphons came out of the contest the victors by a score of 40-7.

Jenna Rutherford registered Brock's only try of the afternoon, opening the game's scoring.

The Badgers were able to temporarily hold off the fierce Guelph attack, eventually conceding a try in the 21st minute to level the game.

The Gryphons capitalized on the momentum, scoring four more tries throughout the first half, to take a 26-7 lead into halftime. Another try at both the beginning and end of the second half cemented the victory for the road team.

The Badgers will look to rebound as they visit the Queen's Gaels on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m., beginning a two-game road stretch.
