Brock baseball rallies to beat Ryerson 4-3

Ayles-web4-1
ST.CATHARINES, Ont.--The Brock University Baseball team improved their OUA record to 17-5 with a 4-3 comeback victory over the Ryerson Rams at George Taylor field on Sunday afternoon in the first of a 3 game series vs. Ryerson to end the OUA Regular Season.

Justin Ayles (Brampton, Ont.) took the mound for the Badgers after an impressive string of three consecutive complete games in his prior three outings. Ryerson's bats were working early though, as Ben Warsh (2 RBI) and Josh Lund (1 RBI) got to Ayles as he allowed three runs (one earned) in the bottom of the 1st inning. That would be the last Ryerson could muster however, as Ayles was dominant through the remainder of his 8.0 IP, 6 hits allowed, 1 earned run, nin w strikeout performance. With the win, Ayles improves to 4-1 on the season with a 1.76 earned run average.

On the offensive side, Brock took some time to warm up, remaining down 3-0 through the 4th inning. In the 5th, the Badgers were buoyed by an RBI triple from Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) as well as Will Nicholson's (Burlington, Ont.) RBI single. The game would remained tied headed into the 8th inning, when Chris Anderi's (Tecumseh, Ont.) RBI single put the Badgers ahead 4-3.

Justin Ayles would come back out for the bottom of the 8th and close the door once again, setting the stage for Badgers closer Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) to enter in the 9th and record his 4th save of the season, ending the game with a quick pick-off move to catch the Ryerson runner napping at 1st base.

With the win, the Badgers remain in 1st place in the OUA standings with just one day left of regular season action to go. Brock will host Ryerson on Saturday at George Taylor Field at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Note that the original schedule had these games for 1:00 and 4:00 PM. Regardless of the results tomorrow, Brock will then take a quick 2 day thanksgiving break before heading back to practice next week to prepare for the OUA Playoffs in Guelph, Ont. October 18th-20th.
