Brock baseball falls to Laurier 5-3 in 11 innings at OUA Championships

GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (29-10 overall) dropped a 5-3 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks in 11 innings to open the 2013 OUA Baseball Championships hosted by the University of Guelph.

In what was to be a pitcher's duel between Laurier's Brett Van Pelt and the Badgers Paul McKenna, became a hitters game as Laurier collected 14 hits and Brock added eight hits in the 11 inning showdown.

McKenna went 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Van Pelt threw seven complete innings allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

After three scoreless innings in the 8th, 9th and 10th, Laurier added two runs in the top of the 11th off Brock closer and OUA All-Star Phil Owen who went four innings allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the loss.

Leading the Golden Hawks was Jonathan Brouse who went 4-for-5 with two RBI, including the game winning RBI in the top of the 11th inning. Alex Kupchak went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Daniel Murphy, Jeff Hunt, Adam Raithby, Callum Murphy, Trevor Nyp, Adam Chong and Chad Keohane all added single hits in the victory.

For the Badgers rookie Justin Gideon went 3-for-5 with a double while James Roffey was 2-for-4.Chris Anderi, Ben Kirby and Wil Nicholson all chipped in with one hit each.

Brock will now take on the loser of Guelph and Western Saturday morning at 10am to stay alive in the double-elimination championship.
