Brock baseball holds on for 9-7 victory over Queens

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (13-3 overall, 8-2 OUA) extended their home win streak to seven games as they held on to defeat the Queen's Gaels by the score of 9-7 in front of a crowd of over 350 in attendance Tuesday night at George Taylor Field.

Brock put up runs in each of the first four innings to take a 6-1 lead after four complete. The Badgers would add three more in the 6th to go up 9-2. Queens would rally late adding four runs in the 7th and one more in the 9th only to come up short. 

Freshman southpaw Luke Miller (Newmarket, Ont.) threw five complete innings allowing one run on two hits for the victory. In the ninth inning, with the bases loaded, Brock closer Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) would retire the final two batters for his fifth save of his career.

Picking up the loss was Queens starter Matt Reagan who threw four innings allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out two and allowing seven walks.

Leading the Badgers offense was junior Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and sophomore Jordan Grant (Misissauga, Ont.) who was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ferri was named the Badgers Player of the Game.

Freshman Marcus Beal (Brantford, Ont.) added a two-run triple off the bench while freshman James Roffey (Guelph, Ont.) recorded a three hit night going 3-for-5. Rounding out the Brock hitting was sophomore Ben Kirby (Burlington, Ont.) (2-for-3) and senior Chris Anderi (Tecumseh, Ont.) (1-for-3).

Queens was led by Andrew Hastings who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Badgers next action is Wednesday, September 18th at 7pm when they take on the Guelph Gryphons in a makeup game from earlier this season. Brock will also be at home on Homecomimg Weekend when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues (Sept. 21st) and Laurier Golden Hawks (Sept. 22).
