Brock baseball finishes second at OUA/OCAA Championship

1792WINDSOR, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (32-5 overall, 17-1) ended the 2014 season with a second place finish at the OUA/OCAA Championships in Windsor.

In the championship finals, the host St. Clair College Saints captured back-to-back titles after defeating the Badgers by scores of 3-2 and 7-5.

In Game One, the Badgers rallied from one run down, but came up short in the end, sending it to a final and deciding game.

Jeffrey Baggaley got the start and went three innings allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Ryan Beckett suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits. Brandon Beattie threw the final three innings of shutout ball allowing just one hit.

Leading the Badgers offense was Justin Gideon (2-for-3) and Dan Nicoletta (2-for-3) who both added two hits. Ricky Ferri, Wil Nicholson and Ben Kirby all recorded one hit each.

In Game Two, the Badgers had a number of opportunities to score, but left the bases loaded in the 4th and 5th innings.

Justin Ayles threw four innings allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in the loss. Phil Owen went 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs (one earned), on two hits with one strikeout. Jeff Baggaley closed out the game going an 1 1/3, giving up one run on two hits. Ayles ends his university career as the Badgers All-Time Leader in victories (27), Appearances (54) and strikeouts (215).

At the plate, Phil Steer, Ricky Ferri, Justin Gideon, Wil Nicholson, Ben Kirby and Chris Anderi all chipped in with one hit each.

* Justin Gideon finished 2014 with the fourth highest single season batting average in school history .470 (55-for-117)
* Phil Owen became the All-Time Saves leader. Has 14 saves in his career
* Justin Ayles ends Brock career as All-Time Leader in victories (27), Appearances (54), innings pitched (228 1/3) and strikeouts (215)
* The Badgers won their 4th OUA Title (2002, 2004, 2010, 2014) in school history
* best single season winning percentage in school history 32-5 (.865)
* 497 wins in the programs history 497-238-5 (.675)
