ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team dropped a 71-57 decision to the University of Illinois-Chicago Monday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the first quarter with the scored tied 13-13 after 10 minutes. In the second quarter, the Badgers went up by as many as six, 29-23, with 3:31 remaining before Illinois-Chicago answered with a 10-0 run to end the half leading 33-29 after 20 minutes.
Brock battled back in the third quarter tying the game 42-42 and then closed out the final two minutes with a 6-0 run to take a 48-42 at the end of three quarters. In the final frame, the Badgers offense would go cold scoring just four points in the final six minutes. The Flames offense outscored Brock 17-4 over the final six minutes on route to their third victory of their Canadian Tour.
Leading the Badgers offense was freshman
Johneil Simpson (Toronto, Ont.) who recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double in his Brock debut. Sophomore
Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, Ont.) added 16 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds for the double-double. Rookie point guard
Yusuf Ali (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in with seven points and six assists in his Badgers debut.
The Flames were led by Jake Wiegand who led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, including 19 in the second half. He also grabbed 15 boards for the double-double.  Gabriel Snider and D'Juan Miller contributed with 11 and nine points respectively.
For the game, Chicago-Illinois shot 34.6 % (27-for-78) from the field and just 15.4 % (2-for-13) from beyond the arc. They also went 15-for-20 (75.0 %) from the charity stripe. Brock was 20-for-64 (31.3%) from the floor, 4-for-17 (23.5%) from three-point range and just 61.9% (13-for-21) from the free throw line.
The Badgers will begin their full training camp the first week of September and open the 2014-15 non-conference schedule September 27th on the road against the Niagara College Knights in the Peninsula Hoops Classic.
