ST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock men's soccer team (1-4-4 OUA) picked up their first win of the season, at home, saturday afternoon with a victory over Algoma University (0-7-1 OUA). Brock improved immensly on yesterday's performance, playing a strong 90 minutes, against a spirited Thunderbird squad.
Both teams came out strong, competing for lose balls and trying to establish possession early on. Â The game seemed to take a turn for the worse for the home-side when a lose ball at the edge of the 18 yard box was the site of a collision between Badger keeper,
Jake Sweetzer, and an Algoma striker. The head referree would elect to hand Sweetzer a red card, ending his afternoon in goal for Brock. Algoma would then take an early lead when striker, Mohammed Aqarni, netted the Thunderbird free kick from just outside the box.Â
Brock wouldn't be down for long, finding an equalizer in the 10th minute by way of a penalty kick off the boot of striker,
Sammy Orlando. Brock continued putting pressure on the Thunderbirds' defence, using their strikers speed to generate chances off the rush and force the ball into the box. Brock would eventually add another goal when
Eric Bradey booted a screaming shot that found the back of Algoma's net, putting the Badgers up by one. Orlando would find the back of the net once more for Brock in the 25th minute, giving the Badgers a 3-1 lead leading into the break.
The home team kept up the pace early on in the second-half controlling the majority of possession. Algoma found themselves in trouble when a hand ball would award Brock their second penalty kick of the match. Brock wouldn't dissapoint,
Johannes Kiendl stepped up to the spot and buried a well struck ball into the opposing goal for the Badgers fourth goal of the afternoon. Brock would later tack on two more with
Philip Kealey (69') and Zair Amel (89') each adding one of their own, renderring the score 6-1 in favour of the Badgers.
Sweetzer's replacement in goal,
Noah Mar, saved four of the five Thunderbird shots, backstopping the Badgers to their first victory of the season.Â
Come support the Brock Badgers when they return to action Sunday September, 28th against the York Lions.Â
