Strong second half leads Brock men's basketball over Niagara

2480WELLAND, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team (0-0 OUA, 2-1 overall) came from behind to defeat the Niagara College Knights by the score of 85-77 Friday night at the 5th Annual Peninsula Hoops Classic.

After taking a 21-18 lead after 10 minutes, the host Knights outscored Brock 24-14 in the second quarter, to take a 42-35 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, the Badgers put together a small run, which found the game tied 68-68 at the end of 30 minutes. After sitting out the entire third quarter with four fouls, Coach Kissi put rookie Johneil Simpson back into the game, and he would be the X-Factor, scoring all 12 of his points in the final 10 minutes.

Dani Elgadi had a strong game for the Badgers, leading all players with a game-high 32 points and 17 rebounds for the double-double. Yusuf Ali contributed with 15 points and five assists while Matt Marshall rounded out the Brock leaders adding 15 points and seven boards.

Leading the Knights offense was Trevon Ash who added 17 points. Also in double digits were Ryan Christie (17 pts) and Levi Mukuna (14 pts).

This foul filled affair saw both teams combine for 64 total fouls. In the second half, with every point counting, Brock shot 17-for-19 (89.6%) from the free throw line while Niagara was just 36.8% (7-for-19).

For the game, Brock shot 45.9% from the field going 28-for-61. They were also 22.2% (4-for-18) from beyond the arc and 71.4% (25-for-35) from the charity stripe. The Knights shot 41.5% (27-for-65) from the field, 20.0% (4-for-20) from long range and just 50.0% (19-for-38) from the free throw line.

The Badgers return to action October 10th at 8pm when they host Memorial University at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
