Brock baseball rallies to keep postseason alive

2954LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team posted a 2-1 record on Day 2 at the 2015 OUA Baseball Championships being hosted by Western University.

The Badgers opened with an 11-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams then dropped a 4-3 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues in Game Two.

In the nightcap, the Badgers found themselves facing elimination as they trailed 6-3 in the eighth inning against the Laurier Golden Hawks. In the bottom of the eighth, Brock added three runs tying it 6-6. In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Kirby (Burlington, Ont.) scored Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) from second base with an RBI walkoff single to left for the victory.

In Game One versus Ryerson, the Badgers scored five runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth, after coming back from a rain delay on Friday.

Leading the Badgers offense was Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, Ont.) who went 1-for-3 with four RBI. Blake Stepien (Guelph, Ont.) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Rob Byckowski (Milton, Ont.) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.  Rounding out the Brock offense was Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) (2-for-4, RBI, 3 SB), Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) (2-for-3, 2B), Quinton Twohey (London, Ont.) (1-for-3, 3B, RBI), Grant (1-for-2, 2 SB), Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) (1-for-3) and Ben Kirby (RBI).

Dylan Perego (Waterdown, Ont.) picked up the win after throwing four shutout innings allowing three hits with four strikeouts. Rookie Chase Porter (Whitby, Ont.) threw two shutout innings with three K's and Adrian Yuen (Ottawa, Ont.) closed out the game with one strikeout over one inning of work.

In the 4-3 loss to Toronto, the Badgers defense committed six errors which led to all four Varsity Blues runs.

Southpaw starter Jeff Baggaley (Whitby, Ont.) went 6 1/3 innings allowing four runs (0 ER) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Bryson Maclean (Whitby, Ont.) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits with two K's.

Ferri, Koziol, Byckowski, Grant and Twohey all chipped in with one hit each.

In the come from behind victory over Laurier, Grant led the way going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a walkoff RBI in the bottom of the ninth. Kirby went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Steer also collected two hits going 2-for-5. 

On the hill, Ryan Beckett (Tiny, Ont.) went 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits with three K's. Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) threw 2 2/3 innings giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Porter went the final two innings for the victory. He allowed just one hit while fanning five. 

The Badgers will face the Western Mustangs at 10am Sunday morning at Labatt Park with the winner advancing to the OUA finals.
