Former swim coach DeBray inducted into Swim Ontario Hall of Fame

3157TORONTO, Ont. - Former Brock University swim coach Herb DeBray was inducted into the Swim Ontario Hall of Fame as a builder.

During his time at Brock, Herb would be selected to attend over 16 different international events as an international coach from the Olympics to FISU Games from Sydney to Zagreb. During his 44 years he was priviledged to coach every level of athlete in swimming and some in other sports while he was a school teacher.

Herb was the Ontario Coach of the Year recipient on five different occasions as well as receiving a Citation from Mr. Art Eggleton for his contribution to Toronto's effort at the 1984 Olympic Games. The Coaching Association of Canada awarded Herb the Petro-Canada Award for Coaching Excellence on two occasions for having coached athletes at the World Record level.  But Herb's work extended past the pool deck.  Herb was the Director of Sport for the Ontario Games Physically Disabled and also stepped in to help Brock host Water Polo for the Ontario Winter Games.

Some of the top athletes Herb coached during his career included Swim Ontario Hall of Fame and Brock Athletics Hall of Fame members Kathy Richardson and David Shemilt, who were both at the event to honour Herb. He also coached three top Para-Olympians including six time Olympic medalist Elisabeth Walker, Tyler Emmett and Tom Hainey.

At this special event, Herb's family including two of his grandkids were in attendance along with Brock alumni Tony Brundle, Lisa (Brady) Mocny, Andrea (Boucher) Shemilt, Ben de Bray, Denise (Power) de Bray, Paul Cappa, Rodney Thomas, Victoria Culp, and Gregg Gleason.

David Shemilt acted as Herb's inductor, and gave a great speech.
