Brock baseball captures OUA silver medal

4114Ajax ON - The Brock University baseball team ended their season with a 6-3 loss to the Western Mustangs in the OUA Championship final Sunday afternoon. The Badgers finished the 2016 season with a 16-6 overall record and the OUA silver medal.

"Although we did not end the season the way we would have enjoyed, we are still proud of what this team accomplished this year," said head coach Marc LePage.

"From bringing in new members to the coaching staff and players, changing the culture of the program, and emphasis on academics. Our players, coaches, trainers, and support staff were dedicated and supported the vision we have for this program. We are excited at the potential this team has, and hope to continue to grow as a program and be an important part of Brock Sports."

The Mustangs scored all six runs in the bottom of the third inning off Brock starter Derek Zwolinski (Burlington, ON) who went just 2 1/3 innings allowing six runs on four hits while walking four and striking out one in the loss.

The Badgers added two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the ninth inning, but that was not enough as they lost the OUA Finals to the Mustangs for the second consecutive season.

Western starter Dustin Godden threw eight strong innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six for the victory.

Leading the Brock offense was Noah Koffman (Richmond Hill, ON) who went 3-for-4 and and rookie Dawson Veeneman (Delta, BC) who was 2-for-3. Brock rookie Matthew Legg (Vancouver, BC) added another hit and finished tied for the playoff lead in average hitting .571 (8-for-14) with eight RBI, two doubles and a triple. Veeneman finished fourth in playoff hitting with a .545 AVG (6-for-11) with one RBI and a triple.

The Mustangs were led by OUA All-Star Jeff Martin who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI while Damon Crumplen collected two hits and drove in a run.
