Men's soccer team returns to Alumni Field

The Brock Badgers men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with the McMaster Marauders under the lights at Alumni Field on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the Badgers' first match since October 2019.

Senior goalkeeper Alex May, who combined for a shut out with Sean Darracott, said it was like a dream to be representing Brock again.

"It felt surreal to be on the pitch finally and representing the Badgers. We've been waiting so long to play alongside each other," said May. "The pandemic was a tough stretch, but we are a family and no matter what, we support each other whether it's with school or soccer. We have each other's backs no matter what."

The Marauders ran into the teeth of Brock's defence and failed to construct any excellent scoring chances.

At the other end of the field, the Badgers came close to capturing the win on two dynamite chances that hit the post and the crossbar.

Striker Michael Solomon waited a long time for the opportunity to dress for the Badgers. He was a redshirt due to an injury during his first year at Brock in 2019.

"I didn't know if I was going to get that chance with the pandemic, but it was a great feeling to play in front of the crowd," said Solomon, a Kinesiology student from Niagara Falls. "My first OUA game exceeded expectations. The fans were electric, and the support from the boys and coaching staff made it feel like a regular-season game."

Solomon almost found the back of the net twice. He was awarded a free kick in the first half, which hit the post, and delivered a header that rang off the bar in the second.

"We played well for our first game together in almost two years," added Solomon. "We have a lot of work to do through transitions and organization, but with our coaching and training staff, I believe we will reach our goal of making the playoffs and beyond."

Interim head coach Erik Van Wissen said his squad made a fantastic effort, especially the rookies who were playing in their first match.

"The new faces on the team blended well with our seasoned veterans to put forth a good performance," Van Wissen said. "A pre-season game such as this provides a great opportunity to work out the little kinks before the season starts. We're pleased with the performance, and we look forward to building on this team chemistry."

The Brock men's soccer team begins its 2021 OUA campaign away at Western University on Friday, Sept. 24 at 8:15 p.m. before hosting the same team on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Alumni Field for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff.
