Badgers split weekend series with Mustangs to open OUA baseball season

The Brock baseball team kicked off their Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season by splitting a home-and-home series with the Western Mustangs from Sept. 18-19.

It was the first ball game for the Badgers since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It felt great to be back on the field. The energy was amazing," said second-year shortstop Ashton Feijo. "Putting on the Brock uniform again after a two-year pause was a moment I won't forget."

The Badgers won their first two games on the road Saturday before losing both home games at Welland Sports Complex on Sunday.

"The Sunday games didn't go our way," Feijo said. "We have the week to regroup and get ready to play our type of baseball next weekend."

Brock temporarily moved to the stadium at Welland Sports Complex while their regular home, George Taylor Field, undergoes maintenance.

The Badgers' offence exploded for a total of 21 runs on the road as they tamed the Mustangs 10-3 and 11-9 at Dan Pulham Field in London.

Starting pitcher Connor Ambrogio captured the win in the first game by striking out eight Mustangs across seven innings. He allowed only one earned run on four hits.

In his first career at-bat for Brock, outfielder Corbin Smith socked a dinger in the second inning to drive in three runs. Brock took an early 5-0 lead and never looked back.

In Game 2, the Badgers stole the lead late during an 11-9 victory. Trailing 7-4, shortstop Tyler Giancos homered on a fly ball to left field to tie the game. The Badgers scored several runs on a series of errors through the fifth and sixth innings.

Brock controlled the lead as pitcher Hayden Stam delivered two scoreless innings. Reliever Cameron Gillis shut down the Mustangs the rest of the way with two scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

On Sunday in Welland, the Mustangs won 16-3 and narrowly defeated the Badgers 2-1 at the top of seventh.

Starting pitcher Brandon Underhill pitched a stellar game in the first contest. He struck out seven batters in six innings. The Badgers offence managed only two hits.

Smith and first baseman Cole Carpenter combined for seven RBI and a total of nine hits in four games. Shortstop Brandon Underhill hit a double and drew four walks.

Up next, Brock (2-2) hosts Wilfrid Laurier (2-2) for a doubleheader at Welland Sports Complex on Saturday, Sept. 25 at noon and 3 p.m. The Badgers travel to Waterloo on Sunday, Sept. 26, for a doubleheader with Laurier.
