ST CATHARINES - The Brock Badgers men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2022-23 season competing at the OUA Sprint Invitational and Brock Fall Invitational this past weekend.
In the opening event which brought together a large contingent of the OUA competition in Guelph, the Brock men and women both placed fourth overall in the team categories. On the men's side the Badgers accrued 343 points (McMaster placed first with 650), while the women totaled 176 (McMaster placed first with 729).
Top individual results included a silver in the 50m butterfly for
Anthony Gunn. Gunn and his teammates
Julien Legault,
Anthonie Korstanje, and
Evan Karlov then combined for a silver in the 200m medley relay. And for the women,
Mckenna Clark,
Chloe Smith,
Jami Fuson, and
Noemie Ringuette achieved a fifth place finish in the women's 200m freestyle relay.
"This meet was a re-introduction to racing meets for our team," mentioned Badgers swimming head coach
David Ling. "It was an important first meet to gain experience and a better understanding because these OUA teams are our direct competitors in the team standings."
Following the OUA Sprint Invtiational on Saturday, the Badgers were right back in the water at their home pool on Sunday. Welcoming teams to the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre for the Brock Invitational, the Badgers finished first overall with the top combined team result for men and women scoring 604.5 points. Queen's placed second with 495, followed by Guelph (475), Laurier (425), and York (174).
Gunn finished first in the men's 50m butterfly, while Korstanje also placed first in the men's 50m breast stroke. The quartet of Gunn, Korstanje, Legault, and Karlov also reached the top step in the 200m medley relay. Meanwhile, Fuson achieve a first place result in the women's 400m individual medley.
Next for the team, a number of swimmers will compete in the Walker Club Invitational hosted at Brock University. The event takes place from October 29-30.
