The Brock men's swimming team captured its first divisional championship in program history on Sunday, Nov. 27.
The Badgers captured first place with a total of 1,030 points ahead of Guelph (885) and Laurier (627) while hosting the two-day Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Boles Divisional Championships at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre.
"This is special. This was their goal from the day I first started talking with them in August," said Badgers head coach
David Ling. "The Brock Sports Performance staff are amazing and the Brock Sports Medicine people are with us every day. We're rowing the boat in the right direction. We're treating this as a start and not an end point. We're pretty happy about that."
Julien Legault, a third-year Kinesiology student from Oakville, led the men's team with two individual school records and two relay school records. He placed first overall in the 50-metre backstroke with a time of 26 seconds and 14 milliseconds to set a new Brock record.
He also placed second in the 200m backstroke (2:06.93) and 100m backstroke (57.33). Both times were new school records. He also led the men's 4x50m medley relay to a first-place finish, and a new school record, with a time of 1:43.85.
Legault recorded the fastest split on in the men's 4x50m freestyle relay (1:35.6) to set another school record. The team finished second.
The Brock women's team placed third with 591 points behind first-place Guelph (1,215) and Carleton (691).
"Our women's team shows up to practice on time every day and are building a strong foundation," Ling said. "They swam exceptionally well. We had some student-athletes climb into the top eight. Now we just need more. They're getting better every day."
Chloe Smith, a second-year Kinesiology student from Severn, Ont, captured fourth place in the women's 50m fly (30.17) and 100m fly (1:07.10). She helped the Badgers to a pair of fourth place finishes in the 4x50m freestyle relay and 4x50m medley relay.
