Hughes, Guy help Badgers defeat Lions

Goaltender Aidan Hughes backstopped the Brock men's hockey team to a 5-3 win over the York Lions in Toronto on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Hughes made 23 saves, and Owen Guy scored two goals to give the Badgers their first win since Feb. 10.

Cole Tymkin, Frank Pucci and Jared Marino each scored a goal for Brock. Defenceman Cole Thiessen tallied two assists and has five points in four games.

The win comes after York spoiled Brock's senior night in St. Catharines on Thursday, Feb. 24. After nine goals in their previous meeting, the Badgers and Lions displayed another high-scoring contest.

"It was good to start playing our identity again. It's a sign that we're heading in the right direction at the right time of the season," said head coach Kevin Forrest. "York made a good push in the third, and our guys showed a stout mental game with their composure to close it out."

Tymkin opened the scoring for the Badgers with a nifty, point-blank move to beat Lions netminder Cole Ceci at 8:56 of the first period.

Pucci tapped in a rebound off a Ryan Burton shot in the second. Zach Taylor earned his first of two assists on the night.

The Lions got on the scoreboard midway through the game thanks to a power-play goal before Guy scored back-to-back goals to give the Badgers a 4-1 lead.

York's Benjamin Evanish completed a hat trick in the third period to give the Lions hope. However, the Brock defence nullified any chances of a comeback.

Marino scored his fifth of the season, an empty-netter, at 19:59 of the third period.

Next, the Badgers (7-3-3) play their final two regular-season games in Toronto against the Varsity Blues (4-7-1) beginning on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m.
