Brock baseball picks up three wins in season opening weekend

ST. CATHARINES - Facing Toronto opponents in a pair of doubleheaders to begin the season, the Brock Badgers baseball team went 3-1 defeating the York Lions twice and splitting with the TMU Bold over the weekend. 

GAME 1: TMU 7 Brock 3

Starting pitcher Brandon Underhill delivered 6 solid innings for the Badgers, striking out eight Bold batters. However, a five run eighth inning was able to propel the visitors to the win. At the plate Tyler Giancos went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, registering two RBI for Brock.

GAME 2: Brock 6 TMU 3

A four run second inning saw the Badgers jump ahead of the Bold setting up a lead that could not be reached. Alex Reynen and Reid Lunney each finished the game with 2 RBI. Three Brock players in total would finish with multiple hits in the series splitting victory.

GAME 1: Brock 8 York 7

In an exciting Sunday morning contest the Badgers utilized a four run eighth inning to secure the one run victory over the Lions. Brock's offence was firing on all cylinders as the team scored runs in four total innings led by a 4-for-4 day at the plate for Ben Grant. Grant registered 2 RBI as well as a walk to round out his stat line. Also producing another solid outing was Lunney who finished with a team-high 3 RBI from a 2-for-4 outing.

GAME 2: Brock 5 York 2

Riding momentum into the final game of the weekend, the Badgers were lifted by stellar pitching from Dante Cifala as he conceded just two runs over 6 innings of work, striking out nine York batters. Brock also saw another perfect hitting performance at the plate as David Polson went 3-for-3 with an RBI showcasing the depth of offense Badgers baseball comes into the season with.

The OUA season continues for the Badgers next weekend with another pair of doubleheaders. Brock first will welcome the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Sept. 17 with first pitch scheduled for 12 and 3 p.m. Afterwards, Brock will hit the road to challenge the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo on Sunday, Sept. 18. with times of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
