The Brock men's hockey team defeated an all-star team from the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) by a score of 6-2 during an exhibition game at Canada Games Park in Thorold on Thursday, Sept. 23.
Â
The match was Brock's first home game in their new rink, the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre at Canada Games Park, since moving from Seymour-Hannah Arena during the off-season.
Â
The Badgers' roster includes a number of players who have experience playing in the GOJHL, including first-year Accounting student
Matthew Riva, who played four seasons with his hometown Niagara Falls Canucks.
Â
"It was an honour for me to play in this game coming from the GOJHL myself," said Riva, who skated on the first line which collected seven points with
Christian Girhiny and
Jacob Roach. "I thought both teams played well, and it was a fun experience for everyone."
Â
Prior to the game, Brock and the GOJHL held a moment of silence for Eli Pralfreyman, a 20-year-old hockey player of the Ayr Centennials who passed away during a pre-season tournament.
Â
A ceremonial puck drop was held with Brad Clarke, Associate Vice-President, Students, of Brock and GOJHL Director, Hockey Operations, Tim Simmons.
Â
Roach opened the scoring and
Jordan Stock made it 2-0 before the end of the first frame. Riva netted a pair of goals as defenceman
Jake Cella also found the back of the net.
Cole Tymkin scored a highlight-reel goal on a breakaway in the third period.
Â
Jacob Chantler of the St. Marys Lincolns and Jayden Baldinelli of the Fort Erie Meteors replied for the GOJHL all-stars.
